Sci-Tech Today.com reports on the unveiling of Sony's PSP Go. A handheld gaming device that plans to take on Nintendo DS and Iphone with its abilities to run games, videos and music.

Launching on Oct 1, the asking price will be 250.00.It will come with 16GB of flash memory and will be lighter and smaller compared to previous versions of PSP. It will feature a sliding panel display that when open will have controls similar to PSP 3000. When the panel is closed users will have access to applications like a clock and calender and they can watch movies or listen to music.

Another anticipated function will be Bluetooth so that players can use wireless headphones and controllers.

As for the games themselves, they can be downloaded instead of being loaded using UMD or "Universal Media Discs." This may or may not please Sony fans who have collected games or movies in that format. PC World makes note of a rumor that "Sony will supply in-store kiosks to allow gamers to dump UMD data onto their PSP Go!, avoiding the pain of repurchasing a game."

Engadget.com is telling gaming enthusiasts that PSP Go is not intended to replace PSP 3000. Both gaming devices will remain on store shelves side by side. The competition for them to beat is Nintendo DS. Iphone is a consideration with its growing applications, but ultimately an Iphone is for making phone calls and text messaging.

Nintendo DS with it's simple, but effective campaign of showing celebs casually playing the games--especially targeting potential female players--has already gained a large share of the handheld gaming market. Combine that with the success of Nintendo Wii and Sony's PSP Go may "go."
