It appears that viewers picked the right night to watch “MTV’s Video Music Awards Ceremony.”
Janet Jackson’s tribute to her late brother, Michael Jackson, Kanye West stealing the spotlight from Taylor Swift during her acceptance speech and Lady GaGa’s distinct performance of “Paparazzi” were some of the highlights that brought in close to nine million viewers. It’s the best ratings for the VMAs since 2004.
Rolling Stone reports that viewership increased by six percent and that the VMAs was the number one cable program for viewers 12-34.
MTV faced stiff competition from HBO’s season finale of “True Blood,” Sunday’s NFL opening game and the U.S. Open.
The VMA’s also presented the trailers for two of this year's most anticipated films. “New Moon” and Michael Jackson’s documentary, “This Is It.”
