James Williamson, the original guitarist for punk pioneers The Stooges, will take the stage once again with the band, reports Rolling Stone.

Guitarist Ron Asheton, who was also with the Stooges from the beginning, died unexpectedly earlier this year. Williamson will take over on lead guitar duties.

Front man Iggy Pop told the BBC that the Stooges are “all very sorry about Ron. His spirit within the group remains with the rest of us and he is still a presence within the group without being on the physical plain.”

Williamson will take over starting November 7 at a show in Sao Paolo, Brazil. A full world tour is planned for 2010, according to Pop. The band is entering its seventh year of continuous touring after almost 20 years of inactivity.

A biopic is also rumoured to be in the works, but Pop told the BBC that he hasn’t “had any contact with those people for a queens age.”
