Fiery Furnaces, Beck, Radiohead feud not going away

After the Fiery Furnaces’ Matthew Friedberger insulted Radiohead for writing a song about experimental composer Harry Partch, which actually turned out to be a song about WWI veteran Harry Patch, Beck posted a song titled “Harry Partch” on his website. Whether this was in response to Friedberger’s misinformed attacks or not, the song turned out to be great.

Interweaving different genres and schizophrenically changing tempo, it could easily remind one of a typically unpredictable Fiery Furnaces song. Beck even stated on his website that the song utilizes Partch’s 43 tone scale, which one can’t help but think is a response to Friedberger saying "How's the song? Is it 48 notes to the octave? What does it have to do with Harry Patch?”

Well, this witty and artistically satisfying attack by Beck has upset Friedberger, who refuses to let this thing go.

The singer/songwriter posted two nonsensical blogs on his Myspace, which spoke of imaginary feuds and imaginary songs. Sparing most of the details, as a way of being merciful to the reader, Friedberger certainly seems upset.

The second blog post wrestles the issue that Friedberger insists he was taken out of context and misquoted in the interview that began the whole rift, as he asserts he meant the whole thing as a joke, but is still, nonetheless, not a fan of Radiohead.

The blogs can be read on the Fiery Furnaces’ Myspace.

Given the evolution of this feud, perhaps Friedberger said it best in his blog post: “How fruitful an imaginary song proved in practice!”
