Them Crooked Vultures

CD Reviews Share
The new supergroup Them Crooked Vultures is Dave Grohl (frontman of Foo Fighters, drummer of Nirvana and Queens of the Stone Age), John Paul Jones (bassist of Led Zeppelin), and Josh Homme (guitarist and lead singer of Queens of the Stone Age). Their debut self titled album doesn’t once lean to one of the artists more than the other, the sound of their experimentations is equally shared lusciously throughout, creating a very original sound of hard rock.

The first track “No One Loves Me & Neither Do I” really presents Led Zeppelin to mind with the guitar riff. The riff continues throughout the track and then the second half of the track brings out the sound of Queens of the Stone Age with this heavy guitar riff that sounds like its being hit back and forth in a ping pong game. The track “Elephants” is also a fun jam out tune. Although it drags some repetitiveness, it has some instrumental experimentation to impress.

“Scumbag Blues” is irresistible, bringing a funky Stevie Wonder-esque keyboard track and clashing it with guitar solos that reign the influence of Eric Clapton (Cream). The track “Bandoliers” feels like an adventure, having various drum fills and a Middle Eastern styled keyboard track.

“Reptiles” is awesome as well, sounding as if Oingo Boingo and Adam & the Ants joined with these vultures. “Warsaw or the First Breath You Take After You Give Up” is not only a long title, but a long track as well. This song feels that The Doors joined with the vultures. Josh Homme’s vocals and roar at the end of the track really reminds me of Iggy Pop’s roaring when he was in The Stooges, specifically “L.A. Blues” from The Stooges album Fun House. It’s very ironic I said that because the track “Caligulove” shows influences of The Stooges and The Doors as well. The intro of the track alone sounds like a Stooges song, but when the vocals kick in, Jim Morrison from The Doors comes to mind.

In short, Them Crooked Vultures is a one-of-a-kind supergroup, colliding great influences and unique experimentations in the birth of a new sound of rock. They give respect to classic hard rock as well. I have a feeling that Them Crooked Vultures could become a very influential band in the near future.
