Dave Grohl Talks About "Nirvana Live at Reading"

Few performances are as legendary as Nirvana’s at the 1992 Reading Festival in England.

Being the festival’s marquis act, the band played a 90-minute set full of energy and theatrics: Kurt Cobain was escorted out in a wheelchair before performing 25 songs in a hospital gown.

Yet, if one remembers correctly, that wheelchair act was poking fun at the probability that Cobain’s illness would keep the band from performing.

As Dave Grohl, who was Nirvana’s drummer at the time, remembers it; he was worried that performance would end the band’s career.

"I really thought, 'This will be a disaster, this will be the end of our career for sure,'" Grohl told the Scotsman. "Kurt had been in and out of rehab, communication in the band was beginning to be strained…People weren't even sure if we were going to show up. We rehearsed once, the night before, and it wasn't good."

Nonetheless, the show etched Nirvana in stone and was released on DVD as “Nirvana Live at Reading” earlier this month.

"It turned out to be a wonderful show,” Grohl said. “And it healed us for a little while.”
